As part of his quest to document every parish in the land, The Village Idiot has finally got around to Bassingham. It will take up about a quarter of an hour of your time, and it’s well worth the effort.

I have created a new page which deals with Somerton Castle. Why? You might well ask for although the building is not within the boundaries of the village there are nevertherless connections to people who lived in Bassingham.
You can explore its story by clicking the image here.
Now, I could very well be courting controversy here. I have tried to work out the history of the various mills that populated the village but it isn’t easy, and this is despite having an excellent resource in Bill & Connie Wilson and Helen Ash‘s The Bassingham Story.
For me, at any rate, there seems to be confusion over which mill was which, and precisely where each one stood.
If you are interested enough, please have a look at this new section and if you can then tell me categoricallythat I am wrong then please get in touch; it’s easy enough for me to change stuff on here and, in truth, it really does need to be right/accurate.
Following my finally gaining possession of a copy of The Bassingham Story (Wilson, B. & C., and Ash, 2003) I have been able to make important additions to the brief histories of the three drinking haunts across the village, namely the “Five Bells”, “The Bugle Horn” and “The Black Swan”. You’ll find them all listed in the BUILDINGS section of the main menu. These are now as complete as I think that they will ever be.
I have added a section about this High Street building using information gleaned from The Bassingham Story (Wilson, B. & C., and Ash, 2003). Click the picture here to read it or find it in the BUILDINGS section of the main menu.
