A zeppelin raid on Bassingham!

I spotted this church magazine (dated September 1916) on eBay but was outbid at the death, but my grateful thanks go to winning bidder John Brogan who has kindly lent me it to scan.

It is essentially a couple of pages of local interest featuring news and advertising relevant to the village wrapped around the standard church magazine itself. It tells the tale of a Zeppelin which paid a flying visit – literally! – to Bassingham on Sunday 29th July 1916, dropping two incendiary bombs in the area of the village. One was found in Mr Pick’s fen field, whilst the other probably fell in the river. Of equal importance to the amateur historian is the back page, where we find advertisements for Arthur Bates’ Lincoln Co-Op; William Winn Marshall’s business right next door to it; John Morshead running the Stores (now Greens); A.E. Kettleborough;’s dental work being carried out on Tuesday evenings at Barlow’s Chemist (I don’t know where this was); and, finally, the Bassingham Coal & Clothing Club (presumably a charitable concern).
