Later photographs

Photographs from this era don’t really fall into my remit but as I came across them – thanks, John Brogan! – I might as well include them, especially since they also cover a few buildings not shown in earlier postcards. They are all © D.L. Roberts, The Dovecote House, Westborough, Newark, Notts., and belong to HISTORIC ENGLAND. They can be seen on their website where you can also order individual photographs. 👍

Despite them having different dates on the back, I suspect that they were all taken on the same day in the late 1960s as the photographer made his/her way through the village photographing whatever properties looked old and then sat down at a later date to add the details on the back of each card. The dates of construction on the back of each photograph are all approximations. The handwritten note “Acc’d on” and then the date 20th June 1969 or 2nd April 1971 is presumably when the photographs were “accessed“? I really don’t know.

I am certainly no expert in interpreting the information on the backs of the cards, but I would hazard a guess on the following key:

  • Description: fm ho (farmhouse); bldgs (buildings); cott (cottage); ho (house); wkshp (workshop); PH (public house)
  • Wall: b (brick)
  • Roof: gabled + angle of gable in degrees; PT (pantile); S (slate?)
  • Door: p (panels?) gl (glazed) thus 4p 2gl = 4 panels, 2 glazed; mod (modern);
  • Date: this will be the approximate date of construction
  • Alterations: any visible or verbally confirmed changes
  • Chimneys: number & construction (4b = 4, brick)?
  • Windows: ?

The roads and streets are arranged here in alphabetical rather than order of importance/size.
