For Sale

On occasion, when buying postcards or some such other items, I end up buying whole lots, many of which are not pertinent to my collection. Some of these are views of surrounding areas and I have decided to offer these up for sale here in case they mean something to visitors to this website. Who knows? One postcard might show one of your ancestor’s dwellings!

I shall endeavour to provide as much detail as I can with regard to age and/or historical facts.

Condition is as per my scans.

Each is individually priced (excluding postage if required) although there could be some wiggle room when buying more than one item. (Note: any pencil-written prices on postcards are those of dealers from whom I bought the cards and not my own prices.)

Please use the CONTACT form should you wish purchase or just make enquiries.

Spilsby

Spilsby
‘HIGH FARM’. Almost certainly a privately commissioned postcard, undated but probably c1910-20. I have identified this building as ‘High Farm’ which is just to the east of Spilsby on the 1887 Ordnance Survey map, and NOT Bassingham as a postcard dealer’s pencil writing suggests. Ink text to the rear mentions Maltby and Winn families (Winns were in Bassingham for decades): “The Maltbys farmed here for many years. Christopher Maltby was Grandmother Winn’s brother.” I have researched the families mentioned… Working backwards from a Winn + Maltby marriage (there seems to be only one: Henry Winn (born Fulletby, Lincs.) married Maria Maltby (born Belchford, Lincs.), Jun Q 1840, Horncastle, Lincs). Maria Maltby was baptised 17th Jan 1820, daughter of James and Ann Maltby, in Belchford, Lincs. Those same parents – James & Ann Maltby – produced a son, Christopher, baptised 26th March 1826, in Belchford, Lincs. Christopher Maltby married Olive Brothwell (born Bardney, Lincs.) in Spilsby, Lincs. Jun Q 1852. Christopher Maltby is listed in the 1861 Post Office Directory as a farmer in Spilsby, Lincs. The Maltbys were in Old Bolingbroke, Lincs. in the 1861 census and they were still there in 1871 (no birth town for Christopher) and again in 1881. 63-years-old Christopher Maltby’s death was registered at Spilsby in the June Quarter of 1889 In the 1891 census Olive was widowed (obviously!) and living with her children and sister Alice Brothwell in Spilsby Road, Bolingbroke, Lincs. In 1901 she was visiting in Wainfleet, Lindsey, Lincs. £10
