I can spot two of my paternal 3 times great grandfathers on the above Directory: John Kelley being a Master Plumber & Glazier (1809-64) who was born in Ruskington but must have been working in Bassingham at this time. His son Fred (1839-1912, also a Plumber & glazier who probably worked with his dad) would marry Mary Ann Rogers, whose father was John Rogers, Publican at the ‘5 Bells’, in the above Directory.
Excellent again, Alan!
I know that there have been Kelleys in the village almost since time immemorial!
And they are still here now; I have had some interesting conversations regarding village history with Graham Kelley, a near neighbour of mine.
Thanks for your response Roger 😊
I have a cousin Graham Kelley, he lives in Wales. For sure, the Kelley’s do get about! I had though the surname spelling could point Isle of Man, but so far my direct paternal line runs to Thurlby in Lincs, Thomas Kelley (1710-77) born in Thurlby, died in Irnham, my 6 x GGF. Lots of plumbers and glaziers in the timeline, my great grandfather Fred, born in Caythorpe, worked as a platelayer on the railways, managed to to get a Signalman’s job in the big smoke of North London and set up a small Kelley tribe in Middlesex.
